The local Rotarians sold chances for the opportunity to have two minutes to gather cartful’s of groceries. There were eight finalists drawn last week at the Seward County Fair and they had the final draw on Saturday, August 17 at Pac N Save. If the person drawn was unable to be at the event or unable to collect the groceries, a substitute could take their place. Local finalist included Joe Ponec, Cindy Bader,

Andrea Cornelio (JC Cornelio was her sub), Alex Sommerfeld (Russ Wissing was his sub), Mike Beins, Broc LaVelle (Russ Wissing was his sub), Sarah Kudlacek and John Hallmark. The winning name was Sarah Kudleck, who bought a ticket from Rotarian Dr. Ron Wallman. “I hope she pulls a bag of pretzels for me!” commented Dr. Wallman. She was able to fill two grocery carts, mostly filled with fresh meat and the check-out tape read $414.85! Pac N Save checker Elizabeth Schultz rang up the order! Each one of the finalists also won a $25 gift certificate. All profits from the project assist in funding the playground equipment at the new Rotary Club Armory Park, located behind the Nebraska National Guard Museum.

Pack N Save owner Paul Mueller drew the winning name out of the shopping basket and Rotarians Russ Sommerfeld, Ken Schmieding, Jon Kruse, Clark Kolterman, Rick Gray and Nina Sommerfeld served as referees and umpires for the contest. Russ Sommerfeld was the timer and Clark Kolterman offered “color” over the Public Address system during the two minutes.

Special thanks to the Seward County Visitors Committee who allowed the Rotary Club members to sell “Grocery Grab” tickets in their fair booth during the fair and to the local Rotarians and members of the community that supported this project by purchasing a chance to be the “Grocery Grab” winner. Rotarian Co-Chair for the event were Rick Endicott and Clark Kolterman. Rotarians Russ Sommerfeld, Jon and Bonnie Kruse and Greg Butcher all served on the Rotary International Matching Fund Committee for the project.
