At the April 29 th Zoom Rotary Club meeting, SHS Senior-Garrett Erickson was named the May Youth Rotarian of the Month and honored at the noon hour meeting. He was introduced by Youth Rotarian Committee member, Rotarian Matt Dominy. Garrett is the son of Brenda and Scott Erickson of Seward.

Academics are important to Garrett, and he is always on the SHS Honor Roll. He is a leader in the SHS National Honor Society and the recipient of the Elks Club Mathematics Award. In 2016 he was named on the UNL Big Red Star award, and also has won the Academic All-State Golf award and Academic All-Conference Golf award. He was a member of the SHS Quiz Bowl Team and participated in various Nebraska State Fair Education Division competitions.
 
Garrett loves athletics and has been very involved and a leader on the SHS Golf Team, earning varsity letters for the last three years. He participated and evolved into a leadership role on the SHS Cross Country Team, also earning a varsity letter for the last three years. He participated in Basketball for two years at SHS as well!
 
Garrett excels as a volunteer at SHS through his service in SkillsUSA, placing ninth place on the state level in the carpentry program at the state conference. He was a four year member of the local FFA Chapter and placed first in the District 5 Creed Speaking contest and qualified for State FFA. He was the recipient of the FFA Greenhand Degree. Garrett was awarded many P.R.I.D.E. Awards –through the nomination by teachers over his high school career for Respect, Effort, Dedication and Preparation.
 
He was a leader and loyal member of both the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), involved in a host of activates and competitions over his high school career and the SHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) all four years of his high school campaign as well. He proudly served as a member of the Seward High Ambassadors program for all four years at SHS.
 
Garrett participated in the SHS One Act program and the Junior Jays Mentoring program. He was selected to be an Outdoor Education Counselor.
 
Garrett loves music-and has been involved as a member of the SHS Marching Bluejays, the SHS Symphonic Band and SHS Pep Band. He also enjoys being a longtime member of the Seward Municipal Band for five years. He also participated in the annual Concordia Musical Arts Day.
 
He is a loyal member of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward, serving as an Altar Boy and volunteers for the various Fish Fries, church auction, and serves as an usher along with other activities involving the youth of his church. He participated in the local St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church Godparent youth group. He is a longtime member of the church youth program and a voice of the youth
at St. Vincent’s.
 
Garrett is employed with his own Lawn Service-and works part-time for WISH Nebraska Inc. in their warehouse.
 
In the area of “Service Above Self,” Garrett has worked with many service projects through SHS SkillsUSA, SHS FBLA and SHS FFA over the last four years. He also loves to volunteer as a coach/mentor for the Little Kids Track Team/Club, the Mayor’s Run and the Youth Golf Camp. He was happy to help with the Husker Dachshund Rescue Home.
 
Garrett plans to attend Doane University in Crete and major in Secondary Education in Math and hopes to play on their Golf Team. His longtime career goals are happiness and becoming a successful Middle School Math Teacher and either a Golf or Basketball coach at the high school level.
 
Garrett was presented with a Book Scholarship from the Seward Rotary Club and will again be honored and thanked in May at the SHS Senior Honors Night which will be featured “on line.” At that time, the Seward Rotary Club will announce the Seward Youth Rotarian of the Year and presented that student with the Youth Rotarian of the Year Scholarship. One Youth Rotarian is selected every month by the Seward Rotary Club to an SHS Senior, with the application available in the SHS Counselor’s office. Ten students have been recognized and honored this school year by the Seward Rotary Club.
