In London, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird publicly demonstrated the transmission of moving silhouette pictures at the London department store, a forerunner to television. In Savannah, Georgia, novelist Flannery O'Connor was born.
And here in Seward, Nebraska, 18 men gathered at the Windsor Hotel for a meeting with 25 Rotarians from York. The Sewardites preceded to organize the Rotary Club of Seward, Nebraska, elect officers and directors, and adopt the Constitution and Bylaws of the club.
100 years later, we thank these 18 individuals, and the York Rotarians, for joining together to promote "Service Above Self" in Seward. Happy Birthday, Seward Rotary Club!
From The President
Happy March, Rotarians!
We have much to celebrate in the coming weeks and as we officially recognize our achievement of 100 years of service in the Seward area, the party is only getting started!
Kurth will enlighten us this month with a strong set of programs. We will welcome youngsters at The Rivoli on March 17 for a free movie day. We will continue encouraging Rotarians to help us achieve $100 (donations) by 100% (of Rotarians) in honor of 100 years of our Club's service above self. Thanks to those who have already contributed!
On April 1, the club will host Raw Nerve at Harvest Hall as a fundraiser towards securing the remaining $67,000 needed for the Bandshell shade project. Please make plans to attend and encourage your friends to join you! A suggested donation of $10 per person will be accepted at the event. Red Path will host a cash bar and donate a portion of proceeds to the project, and Gary Rolf is doing the same for Nebraska’s Best Kettle Corn. We are working to secure a pizza by the slice option, and perhaps another sweet treat. Businesses are encouraged to partner with us as an event sponsor and to bring their employees for an evening of fun.
In this month of “luck,” know that I feel blessed to serve alongside each of you. Thank you for choosing to serve as a Rotarian.
Anita
Centennial Project Update
A small group of Rotarians has been working with the city, architects, and vendors for the Bandshell shade project. Given the needs of the project and community, the project budget is almost $150,000 with completion sought for June 2025. The committee is confident in the ability to raise the remaining needed funds based on interest, grant applications in process, and the planned fundraising event.
As of February 28, 2025
Personal Donations: $16,700
Grant Funds Secured: $66,000
Total Required: $150,000
Funds To Be Raised: $67,300
The Centennial Project committee challenges all Seward Rotarians - yes, 100% - to contribute at least $100 toward this project commemorating 100 years of service to Seward. To date, 7 out of 53 (13%) members have met this challenge. Thank you!
In recognition of our Club's 100th anniversary and 100 years of "Service Above Self" in our community, every Seward Rotarian is asked to contribute $100 to the Seward Bandshell covering project. For those who've already contributed, thank you! To those who haven't yet, let's hit this goal by March 25. You can bring your cash or check (payable to the Club) to a weekly meeting or make it online through ClubRunner (instructions at "Read More" link).
There's a lot already in the works for our Club's 100th Anniversary Year and the excitement is building. Wouldn't it be great to capitalize on it by growing our Club?
According to one survey of Rotarians, 85% joined their current club because someone invited them. So who do you know that would make a great Rotarian? Now that you've thought of them, invite them to join you at one of our weekly meetings - perhaps Gov. Pillen's visit on August 28th - and introduce them to your fellow Rotarians. After that, well, you joined, didn't you?
Former District Governor Mick McKinley is challenging every Rotary club in District 5650, including Seward Rotary Club, to be a "Every Rotarian, Every Year" club
Whether you attend every week (hi, Ken!), once a month, once a quarter, here's the fact - our Club is better with you present! If you haven't been in a while, attend Rotary this month. If you're attending monthly, set a goal to attend twice a month in 2025. Our weekly meeting is how we stay connected as Rotarians and best informed about how each of us, and our Club, can serve our community. See you at Rotary!
For 100 years, Seward Rotary Club has generally met at the southwest corner of Main and 6th Streets. It was organized at the Windsor Hotel and today meets on the same site in the Jones Bank Auditorium.
