The Seward Rotary Club “Zoomed In” on Seward High senior, Blair Souchek who was selected the April Youth Rotarian of the Month and honored at the April 15 TH ZOOM Rotary Club meeting at the Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon noon hour meeting. She was introduced by Rotarian Matt Dominy. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Russell Souchek of Seward.
The Seward Rotary Club meeting was conducted by President Kurth Brashear. He opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag and prayer was offered by Rotarian Pastor Scott Bruick. The recitation by the Rotary Club members of the Rotary Four Way Test followed. Melanie Ayres announced the 53 rd Wedding Anniversary of Bonnie Kruse and her Birthday. Russ Sommerfeld announced that the Seward Rotary Club would be collecting pairs of shoes to donate to the Seward High Marching Band program, collecting shoes to sell with funding going to assist the expenses towards the band’s Peach Bowl trip at the end of the year. He also announced that the Rotary Arbor Day and Kite Contest were canceled. Jon and Bonnie Kruse updated the Rotary Club on the proposed District Grant and the status of the Rotary Clubs Global Grant request for the Bahama hospital. Russ Sommerfeld and Phil Bangert encouraged promotion of the Rotary Club’s Miss Independence and Mr. Firecracker essay contest where essays are due by May 20 th , 2020 to Phil Bangert at the Jones Bank. New member, Anita Foor was inducted into membership by Membership Committee member Rick Gray.
The Seward Rotary Club will again sponsor the annual July 4 Outdoor Holiday Home Decorating Contest in conjunction with the annual Seward Fourth of July Celebration activities in Seward. The contest will judge area home outdoor décor and lighted patriotic decorations on and around area homes. The annual contest will be judged on Sunday, June 28th and winners will be announced in the local papers. The contest is open to homes in the Greater Seward area only. The goal is to generate enthusiasm and patriotism and assist in Seward keeping the red, white and blue theme as “Nebraska’s Official Fourth of July City!”
Now is the perfect time while stationed at home to clean your closets and sort through your large shoe collection-eliminating the ones you will never wear. Many have the time and now have a place to donate and rid themselves of all of the shoes that they never wear or never liked in the first place. The SHS Marching Band is collecting shoes to raise funds for their approaching Band Trip to the Atlanta Peach Bowl during the Holiday Season this year and the Seward Rotary Club and GFWC Seward Woman’s Club want to help promote the effort.
Seward Rotarian Senator Mark Kolterman introduced Jay Reppe, Senior Economist for the Nebraska Farm Bureau, who gave a presentation to the Seward Rotary on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at noon in a virtual Zoom meeting. He is formerly from Humboldt, holds two degrees from UNL and has been with Farm Bureau for 26 years. Todd LaVelle served as the program chair and the meeting was conducted by Rotary President Kurth Brashear, who recognized SHS Senior Garrett Erickson as the Youth Rotarian of the Month.
Seward School District Administrators: Dr. Matt Dominy, Director of Curriculum and Staff Development, and Jill Johnson, SHS Vice Principal, who are both members of the Seward Rotary Club, presented a program on “How The Seward School District is Coordinating the Education Process and Dealing with the COVID-19 Virus.” The presentation was made at the recent Seward Rotary Club meeting via Zoom, a cloud-based communications software, on April 15 th , 2020. Rotarian Todd LaVelle served as the program chair and coordinated the program. Prior to their presentation, SHS Senior Blair Souchek was introduced and honored as the April Youth Rotarian, and Rotary President Kurth Brashear conducted a short business meeting, complete with the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer, and recitation of the Rotary Four Way Test. Rotarian Mark Suhr hosted the Zoom meeting.
At the April 29 th Zoom Rotary Club meeting, SHS Senior-Garrett Erickson was named the May Youth Rotarian of the Month and honored at the noon hour meeting. He was introduced by Youth Rotarian Committee member, Rotarian Matt Dominy. Garrett is the son of Brenda and Scott Erickson of Seward.
