Representatives of Seward Changing the Game, which is leading the development of the Seward Wellness Center along with the City of Seward, presented an update of the progress on the new Seward Wellness Center, sharing the architect’s renderings of the facility, reporting on actions taken over the least 18 months, and giving an update on funding for the project, inviting Rotarians to give to the project to ensure groundbreaking this fall.
District Governor Kathryn Schubert is inviting Rotarians from throughout District 5650 to attend the 2023 District Conference October 13-14 at the Omaha Regency Marriott. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to share and grow as Rotarians as we Create Hope in the World!" Schubert said.
The conference will begin with a luncheon on Friday, followed by service and social activities. Saturday will feature a full day of speakers and activities before culminating in an awards dinner Saturday night. There is an registration fee discount if you register by September 10. There is a block of rooms being held at the Marriott through September 22.
State Senator Jana Hughes (District 24) purchased three raffle tickets for the Seward Rotary annual “Grocery Grab” recently, helping launch this year's fundraiser. Proceeds from this year's fundraiser will be included in Rotary's support of the proposed 4-H/ FFA Tribute Exhibit to be located at the Seward County Fair Grounds.
The drawing for the preliminary raffle will be on October 4 with the final drawing at Pac N Save in Seward on October 7 at 1:00 pm. Grocery Grab raffle tickets are available at Pac N Save and from Seward Rotary members.
Jonathan Jank, President & CEO, and Jacob Jennings, Community Affairs Director, provided an update from the Seward County Chamber & Development Partnership on current happenings within the SCCDP, the community of Seward, and Seward County at Rotary's meeting on August 2, 2023.
Clark Kolterman joined the Seward Rotary Club on July 1, 1973 and was recognized at the July 12, 2023 Club meeting for his 50 years of membership. Kolterman was presented with a special Rotary 50 Year Pin and is the second member of Seward Rotary Club to achieve the milestone, joining Chuck Matzke, who reached 50 years in 2022.
Kolterman has served Seward Rotary Club as President, a member of the Board of Directors, chair for many of the club’s local projects, host for the annual bubble gum and apple pie eating contests on the 4th of July, contest judge, one man public relations team, and much more. Kolterman has served Rotary District 5650 as well and he and his wife Linda have hosted several exchange students over the years. Both Clark and Linda Kolterman are Paul Harris Fellows.

State Senator Jana Hughes (District 24) was the featured program at the July 12 Seward Rotary meeting, where she shared her reflections from her first year in the Nebraska Legislature.
Rotary International President R. Gordon R. McInally has called for members to capture the world's attention and lead the way toward possibilities far beyond our current expectations.
McInally, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland, revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World, during the Rotary International Assembly in Orlando in January 2023. He urged members to promote peace in troubled nations, help those affected by conflict, and maintain the momentum of initiatives begun by past leaders.
"The goal is to restore hope — to help the world heal from destructive conflicts and, in turn, to help us achieve lasting change for ourselves," McInally said at Rotary's annual training event for incoming district governors.
McInally spoke about a woman he met in Ban Taling Chan, Thailand, where Rotary members helped build houses, a meeting hall, and childcare and health care facilities following the tsunami that devastated South Asia in late 2004. The woman had lost her husband, her daughter, and her son in the tsunami, as well as her livelihood. But she still had a gift to offer McInally: a beautiful seashell.
"She went on to tell me that Rotary... had restored her optimism. We gave her hope," McInally said.
"This is how Rotary brings lasting change to the world," he added, "one restored or newly created hope at a time."
Kurth Brashear spoke with his fellow Seward Rotarians about Nebraska's highway system, the nationally known Highway 2, and a proposal to restore that highway's link to Seward County at a May meeting.
